Ahhhhh what a spectacular day at sea! After a few weeks of no blue whale sightings for us, it was refreshing to know these gentle giants are still enjoying the channel!
Out of the harbor, our private charter watched a few hundred common dolphins. A few groups were feeding while others came to the boat to investigate our shiny hull. Enjoying the company of common dolphins is the very best way to start our trip! After continuing southwest, a GIANT mola mola stopped us in our tracks. The giant beast was probably the size of a car hood and stayed several feet down for the majority of the encounter.
The blue whale hotspot wasn't in their typical zone today. Our crew hadn't seen them feeding in this area in years, but with close proximity to shore, we spent 2 hours surrounded by giant whales. The whales were partaking in short dive cycles and we would often see 5 or 6 whales at the surface at one time. Many whales fluked and even pooped as they went down for dives. As we meandered we estimated watching 10 different individuals with more spouts in the distance.
It was a beautiful day at sea spent with an amazing boat full of passengers! Special thanks to our friend Captain Luke on the NOAA vessel SHEARWATER, for setting us up on this group of whales today!
Until Next Time,
The SBWW Crew
