WOW! Today was one for the ages. After a few weeks of dense fog and high winds, we were finally graced with blue skies and an endless amount of BLUE WHALES!
Before we got to the blue whale hotspot, we spent time with common and bottlenose dolphins in beautiful sea conditions. Both species were interactive and friendly. It's always a plus to get both of these species in one trip.
Moving west off Santa Rosa Island, we found the absolute motherload of blue whales. We closely watched 15 Blue Giants, but as we looked west, endless spouts seemed to light up the horizon. There were likely ~30 whales in this area. Groups of 4 or 5 would surface at a single time, all after long dives searching for krill. Among the whales, a cow/ calf was seen, although at this time of the year, this calf is most likely 8 months old and probably pushing 40 feet long! We also watched a pair of humpback whales before heading home to good ol' SB.
Until Next Time,
The SBWW Crew
